AI-designed materials for the Industrial Frontier.

Informed by Industry. Grounded in Physics.

Progress in energy, computing and clean water depends on new materials that are proven,

not just viable.

THE DEMAND

But modern industry cannot continue to wait a decade or more for new materials.

THE BOTTLENECK

AI has advanced discovery, but the bottleneck remains downstream: physically proving performance in real systems.

THE APPROACH

Archean inverts the problem, designing new materials backwards from the systems that will use them.

We synthesize those materials in our own labs, prove they perform under the conditions they will face, and bring them to market with our partners.

Every application starts by studying the physical environment into which a new material must be integrated and deployed. We design backwards from there, using AI to explore a vast space of possibilities and engineer the material the system requires.

We design synthesis routes with manufacturability and cost in mind. Then we make the materials in our own labs.

We prove performance under real-world conditions. Partners get materials they can deploy, not a list of options they still have to validate.

ABOUT

Built at the intersection of materials science, computation, and industry

Archean’s technical roots are at UC Berkeley, in an institute built to do something universities rarely do: put chemistry, computer science and robotics against the same problem. The Bakar Institute of Digital Materials for the Planet was created to accelerate foundational materials discovery, and that convergence produced our science, our people, and our direction. Archean was built to carry it into industry.

MATERIALS SCIENCE

Our scientific foundation draws on the metal-organic frameworks recognized by the 2025 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

AI & COMPUTATION

Our computational foundation draws on the creation of the systems that underlie modern data and AI infrastructure.

INDUSTRIAL COMMERCIALIZATION

Our operating leadership has spent decades turning advances at the edge of the physical and digital worlds into products at industrial scale.

Archean is named for the eon when Earth’s stable crust first formed: the crystalline foundation upon which the world’s continents still rest. We create the equivalent material foundation for the industrial future by designing, synthesizing, and proving the materials the physical economy will depend on.
